What are the benefits of a good graphics card?

Other than being able to play games with good graphics, what benefits would I get from having a nice graphics card, compared to having integrated graphics?

  1. Depends what you mean by "nice". Most graphics cards are for games, which require high speed processing. If you're not going to be playing games then integrated graphics should be fine. But you can also get other graphics cards which perform other interesting functions, like allowing you to run 2 or even 4 monitors at the same time.
  2. well it'd make your computer better for intense video editing and it would free up the shared memory your old integrated card was using (Giving you more RAM for your computer to use.) Graphics cards are the first thing on a computer to go out of date, so it's best to get a good one.
  3. Faster refresh rate. For example if you work with photos you'll be able to display them faster especially if you have multiples. With an enhanced graphics card you will have better color resolution overall on your monitor.
  4. well, graphics cards are not only for gamers integrated graphics takes away from the RAM when doing basic tasks, like displaying the monitor, and after installing a graphics card, you would probably see a significant perfromance boost since now the gpu and ram on the card will take care of most of the graphics, allowing the mobo's ram to deal with other tasks additionly, if you do video editing or other graphics intensive tasks, a moderatly discrete video card would significantly increase performance finally, with a good video card, you can have a dual display, or even use a tv as your monitor btw, you can get a pretty good video card for under $100, so for increased performance, its a pretty good thing to consider
  5. on-board memory shares memory with the ram so if you have low memory and are used to using computers with more than one program active will definitely slow or crash your system down in short multi-tasking will not be easy, applications such as Autocad, video and photo editing, simulation softwares would run "nice" on a dedicated graphics card.
  6. An onboard gets faulty easily, in fact my old computer's built-in has phase all wrong from day one and have a red/pinkish hue but I slapped on better card to play games.
