How does a graphics tablet work?

If you have a small graphics tablet how can you draw a big picture? I'm sorry if that sounds silly, I've never used one before!

1. The field of the tablet will be mapped to the entire size of the screen. So if you move your pen from one edge to the other then it'll move across the whole screen.
