What do I do if my graphics cards fan suddenly slows down and starts making a ton of noise?

I have a Radeon x800 graphics card (it is 4 years old :O ) and it just suddenly started making loud noises. So I opened up my computer case and noticed that the fan was moving slower and was changing speeds at random times. What should I do?

  1. if u cant clean the fan (most of them are capsulated and you cant open them) then you have to deal with the noise or either buy a new one. Its not that expensive anymore.
  2. The noise you are hearing is the fan bearing(s), as they don't last forever and are probably full of fluff and dust. You may be able to pop off the fan and clean it up. If this doesn't work it's unlikely you will be able to get a replacement fan and it'd be far more hassle than sourcing a fairly cheap, new graphics card which will kick the old one's butt anyway. I've just junked a NVIDIA 7600GT for the same reasons. It started with the same symptoms as yours but was given an extra year of life with some TLC and light grease. It is now, however, in silicon heaven. Don't be tempted to disconnect the fan to kill the noise (unless you can find some alternate cooling), as the chip on the gfx card will probably fry.
  3. change the fan as it has lived its life and parts inside (ie bushes) are worn out.
